A Quick 3-Point IT Inspection for Small Business Owners

Article By: Rich Silva – Founder – Pain Point IT Solutions, Inc.

We’ve all heard of 20, 30, and 100 point inspections offered by car repair shops. This is where the auto-shops wow you with how many things they check in your car when you bring it in for an inspection. You willingly hand them your money to check these things and can probably, if tasked maybe name 5 of the 100 things they check.

In this article, to make things simple, I will name just THREE (3) IT items that every Small Business Owner should have inspected regularly, but most don’t. Read my 3 point IT inspection and see how you stand.

Inspection 1: Was Our Data Backed Up Today ?

Believe it or not, most Small Business Owners can not answer this question. They rely on their IT person to do this for them and the most common answer I get is “I believe so”. You should have an IT partner who you trust to the point where you confidently say “Yes”. Remember, it is ultimately YOUR RESPONSIBILITY and your business to audit your IT people to make sure the backups are happening. To accomplish your goal of passing this inspection item, you should refer your IT partner to a Managed Service Provider such as Pain Point IT Solutions who put systems in place to watch this for you and take action if something is amiss.

Inspection 2: Are All Of Our Computers Updated ?

Guess what ? Most Small Business Owners response to this when I’ve asked is “I think so..”. If this is you, query your IT partner to see what they are actively doing to make sure your computer systems are getting their security updates and that the anti-virus systems on the machines are getting their signature updates. Sorry to say that those FREE anti-virus downloads are not reporting to anyone other than the computer users themselves whether they are working. To accomplish your goal of passing this inspection item, you should refer your IT partner to a Managed Service Provider such as Pain Point IT Solutions who put systems in place to watch this for you and take action if something is amiss.

Inspection 3: Things are Slow Lately. Why ?

Things seem slow lately. You, as a Small Business Owner need to make an informed decision about where to spend time and resources in your IT infrastructure to address the issue. So, do you have the means to produce a historical trend report on your network bandwidth or server resources so you can make that decision? Most Small Business owners do not and often reactive monitoring systems are put in place by their IT people to hopefully “catch” the issue the next time it happens (if it happens). How do you make sure your not trying to solve a bandwidth issue by buying more memory for your computer, or vice-versa? To accomplish your goal of passing this inspection item, you should refer your IT partner to a Managed Service Provider such as Pain Point IT Solutions who put systems in place to watch this for you and can produce the reports you need to make an informed decision.
Conclusion

If you did not PASS these inspections, that’s okay because now is the time to address them because I assume all is FINE now. Let’s not wait until it’s too late and react.
